Project A/D

Welcome to the beginning of a long journey of ours. Lee and I (Scott) have been working on this project for the past seven years, and it has seen no slowdown in our enthusiasm and belief that the world we are creating will be a deep and engrossing one. We hope that all who view these preliminary designs and ideas will appreciate the passion we have for this project and the time we have put into it. You will see discussions and concepts being developed throughout this blog, and we hope to be able to utilize this unique tool of blogging to develop our project into full blown, published, professional work. Thanks for visiting, and stay tuned for new details!

Back on Track

Lee and I (Scott) have been giving the project a little breathing room over the past few months, but we're back on track and have some exciting revelations coming up. Over the past few weeks we have been meeting and discussing the continuity of the story and motives of the characters (mainly the President and Zephyr). While exploring their motives and roles in the story, we have crafted a more stable foundation for the characters and story in order to draw the readers into the world in an intimate way and bring an emotional connection to each of the characters. Stay tuned for more details.

Another exciting development is the decision we made together (about 2 weeks ago) to combine the trilogy into one book, but each of us write separate versions of the book from the viewpoints of James and Vincent. I will be writing Vincent's story and Lee will be writing James' story. For the sake of continuity (and the ability to swap books and still understand the main storyline) we have come up with key events/milestones that each character will come to where they interact with each other. These scenes will bring to light more details concerning the personality of each of the characters at these various moments, and in between the scenes, by having two stories running simultaneously, we can explore our entire world that we have engineered.

So basically, the book, when it releases, will consist of 1) Vincent's Story 2) James' Story and 3) an illustrated encyclopedia/index for quick reference to the history of the world as well as a visual reference to the locations and characters as we have imagined them.

We are very excited, and we are gearing up to actually sit down and write the book. So far, we have written small scenes to establish the settings and been trying to plan the major events and plot points (as well as character development as we mentioned earlier). Since we are nearing the end of our (very long) preproduction phase of writing, we will soon begin translating our vision into the concrete form of a science fiction novel.

Key Terms

Cycle - Period of intense climate conditions, including earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, acidic rain, dust walls, and raining spikes (floating plants that wither in the harsh conditions, then when the weather is better, they sprout again and make the journey back to the sky where the nutrients are thickest and the air thinnest). The planet is in this condition for much of the time each year, and it is the period when the heavens need to migrate until the climate changes pass.

Transitions - Short periods between cycles where the climate is hospitable for landing and maintenance. Landing pads are located around the planet and were created by each civilization in an effort to unify their common goal of survival.

Underworld - The crusted over ruins of colonies that attempted to keep living on the surface after the catastrophe changed the face of the planet. These cities had built walls all around the city (like a dome)  that protected them for a time. When the cycles would come, it would slowly destroy the cities from the inside and oustide. The earthquakes destroyed the inner city, while the constant volcanic river flows would surround the walls of the city. During each transitional period the lava would harden, and while the people tried to cut it away from the walls at first, the cycles began increasing in intensity and frequency to the point where the cityies were literally buried alive.
